Spotify (and YouTube): Quba FM

lady-gaga-bad-romance-alexander-mcqueen-shoes-and-polar-bear-coatIf you haven’t heard of it before, Spotify is a “peer-to-peer music streaming service that allows instant listening to specific tracks or albums, with virtually no buffering delay”. Basically, this means it is iTunes without the iStore. The service is free (if you have an invite and don’t mind ads) or premium for £9.95 a month. The  premium package has no ads and also allows you to listen to music offline and on your mobile phone. You can also buy an ad free day pass for 99p.

Anyway, here in the Quba office I decided to create a Spotify playlist of our favourite songs to help you (and me, seeing as I’m still the new girl!) start to get to know the team.

Listen to the Quba Digital play list on Spotify. If you don’t have a Spotify account, you can listen to our playlist on YouTube. Ahhh the wonders of technology!

Mr Brightside – The Killers
Office Manager Anna John says “just love it, such a mood lifter, will pull me out of any bad mood”

Creep – Radiohead
Managing Director Matthew Williams picked this track even though it’s “probably the most recognisable track from Radiohead, so much so they refused to play it at live sets as fans only wanted to hear this track in the early days. It’s a real rollercoaster with a lot crammed in to a relatively short recording.”

Strict Machine – Goldfrapp
This one is mine, I picked this because it’s great to dance to and I love Allison Goldfrapp’s use of my two favourite things, fashion and animals, (especially dogs!) in her videos.

Stayin Alive – Bee Gees
New Business Director David Sealey keeps it simple, “one of my faves that I keep going back to”.

nickDig, Lazarus, Dig!! – Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
Charlie Hill, our Project Manager picked this song because, “..it is very good to walk to.  I am trying to shift some of that Christmas weight so it’s on repeat a lot at the moment! They are also the 3rd best band ever in history…”. I’m not sure who the first two are yet so I must do some digging (Lazarus – haha).

Money for Nothing – Dire Straits
Developer Matthew Solly chooses Dire Straits because “its a song that reminds me of my younger days and is a real feel good song!”

Bad Romance – Lady Gaga
This is another one of mine…well I am doing the work of making the list! I put this one in because the moment I saw the video was the moment I went Gaga for the lady. Love her clothes, shoes, performance, everything!

Rubina –  Joe Satriani
Finally we have resident rock star and developer Ben Franklin who picks Joe Satriani, “Being a guitarist I just love the emotion in this instrumental song =)”

So there you have it, an eclectic selection from some of the Quba boys and girls. If you disagree with our choices, let me know in the comments.

  • I would go for 'Newborn' by Elbow. This is a wonderful song which broke them through on Radio One and launched there career. I'm proud to say this release was on the 'Uglyman' label which I was fortunate to be an owner of with my friend Guy Lovelady. I would also go for 'Thunder Road' by Bruce Springsteen and 'Bullet proof' by La Roux.

I think that Quba need to get some more leftfield tracks in the office. Suggest some Deerhunter for a bit of noise and some KC Creosote for Nu folk melodies.
  • Hello Rob, thanks for the recommendations. I will berate the office and suggest they expand their horizons. While I'm at it I would like to add Guns n Roses, Appetite for Destruction (the whole album) to my playlist, as in my opinion it remains the greatest album ever created.

I like the sound of berating the office. Please do! Esp Mr Wilmot who I thought had quite experimental musical outlook.
  • Well unfortunately Mr Rob Wilmot did not reply to my all staff email! I guess he needs the harshest berating of all!
  • I go for...Complete Control by The Clash. Can't think of any reasons!
